Japanese Dreams

This master bedroom was styled around the beautiful classic woven cane bed and matching bedside tables. The bed space was further defined by adding a large maroon and black patterned wool rug. A chest of drawers was added in the corner to play a dual role of providing both storage and acting as a dressing table.

The countertop of the chest of drawers was used to make a feature display of pretty perfume bottles atop red lacquer trays bought in Vietnam and leather storage boxes brought home from Marrakesh. The bed was dressed in crisp white bed linen and finished off with two raw silk cushions and a patterned black velvet bedspread at the end to add further texture to the scheme. The pièce de résistance is the addition of the large antique hand-painted Japanese screen from the 1880s placed behind the bed as a feature wall. This gorgeous screen was obtained on eBay for a modest sum! The addition of the screen is a great example of incorporating a one-off find to a scheme to add interest and elevate the style statement of the entire room.
